I bought this for my granddaughter so that she could go fishing with daddy. The set arrived quickly in perfect condition. My granddaughter practiced and practiced her casting and then did go fishing with daddy. Unfortunately she didn't catch anything but the rod and reel are very cute, sturdy....perhaps the next time they go fishing she'll get the "catch of the day."

so fun...ordered for a friend (who loves fishing) who recently had twin grandaughters. He loved the matching gifts and cant wait for the little ones to become his fishing buddies.

This fishing pole was a gift, the second Shakespear fishing pole we have purchased, one for our first granddaughter (which has caught many trout in Vermont) and now one for our second granddaughter. Although we have no history with this particular purchase, we have no reason to think that it will not perform as expected. Shakespeare fishing poles like these work just like the "big kids" poles, and we have been more than pleased with past experience.

Purchased two of these rods to take my grandkids fishin'. They were definitely ready to graduate from their bamboo poles. This is an uncomplicated rig that was easy to set up, and the children quickly mastered casting. They (and I) really enjoyed these rods! A great purchase!

I purchased this for a friends grandson and when the product arrived the box was broken open...other than that it appeared to be ok..still haven't given it to friend yet!

OK, I am a bassoholic, I admit it. I have just about every book on striped bass and have fished it almost exclusively for near 38 years from shore and boat from Nantucket to Virginia (but 90% in NE). This book was a little bit of a let down for me. I get SWS and figured this would be the modern day defacto-standard complete works on how-to. But is is just an introduction IMO. There could be a lot more details. It is worth it if you are not familiar fishing for stripers and want a quick lesson, and there are some decent sections and good basic info but there are other books that are far more interesting and have more detailed info. I bought it, read it and it sits on the shelf...haven't opened it since.

A good book to have around...some good tips and different takes on bass fishing technique that I found both entertaining and usefull...good stuff on wire line...rips...enjoyed!

I am new to surfcasting and found the book to be a good overall source of information about fishing for Stripah. It's a good source for someone breaking into the sport. The book has some great illustrations and covers everything from migration to location to baits and rigs to conservation.A nice book to pass to my son in a few years.

Not quite as pretty as a some fly fishing coffee table books, but beautiful pictures and finally a fishing book with recepies.Format is a little choppy with the multi-author approach, with some redundancies.

Fly Fishing for Trout in Streams: A How-To Guide (The Freshwater Angler) Fly Fishing for Trout in Streams: A How-To Guide (The Freshwater Angler)

Reviews

Like many flyfishermen I have a long shelf of books on this sport. Most of those books are enjoyable and/or informative, but if I were forced to choose one book to give to a beginner who wants to pursue trout in streams this is the one I would pick. Nearly every aspect of the sport is covered, from choosing equipment, to tieing knots, to casting and reading the water. Every major surface and subsurface technique is covered in good detail. Anyone who takes the time to learn all of the skills covered in this book will be a very competent trout fisherman. I'd like to agree with other reviewers by saying that the photos in this book are absolutely stunning and the illustrations are very clear. The text is neither flowery nor stilted. Any literate person, of just about any age, should get a lot out of this book.

This is a cool book to have laying around. You will pick it up many times to review the information on trout habitat or to read about fly fishing methods. The underwater photography is wonderful. This hard back book make a great coffee table book or a great conversation starter. The fly fishing information is first rate. I found the high sticking nymph methods very interesting since we are in the middle of the snow 'run off' and fishing the rapids. This would be a great book for the novice or the experienced fly fisherman to own.

This book is a piece every fly fisherman should have. It's a good book for begginers and old fisherman's. It's a real complete review of all what is envolved in this sport.

It's a very comprehensive book, covering from the esentials to the advanced techniques, experienced anglers will not find new tricks, but rather good photography and a way to introduce freinds and relatives to the sport. New anglers and intermediate fly fisherman will find this book very helpfull in the path of the always learning fly fishing hobby.

Ray knows California fishng inside and out. He offers specifics for where, when, what, how. It's amazing how much info he has crammed into one book. This book is comprehensive, to say the least. I bought it on the recommendation of a friend. I recommend it to you. If you fish north of California, try my book, "How to catch salmon, sturgeon, lingcod, rockfish, & halibut." It covers OR to AK.

i bought this item as agift for my husband. he seemed to like it. it fits together and takes apart very well. i like the size as it can fit in carryon or checked luggage. and this is the only reel and rod set i found with a soft zippered case. very nice

This is a good, compact unit for travel and camping. The rod assembles easily and seems to be of good quality. It is stored in sections, not telescoping. The reel was a little difficult to set up and adjust, but worked well when everything was assembled. The case is nice quality, but not lightweight ripstop - a little bulky and heavy for serious backpacking.

I bought this for my kids for Christmas and on the handle is a warning that the product contains lead. Where is this lead? Is it somewhere trivial like inside the reel where I could care less, or is it in the handle materials for which I would want to return this item as I don't want my kids using it if it's going to constatly be rubbing lead onto them. The label warning was on the handle, but that doesn't really mean anything as far as location of the lead goes.

I bought this fishing pole for my son,but Warning Sticker read "This product contains lead, a chemical known to the State of California to cause cancer, birth defects, and other reproductive harm etc" So,I return the product to amazon....I would not recomend product contain Lead Paint on fishing rod...

I found this to be nice little kit when I want to do some casula fishing while I am traveling and need a diversion. I would recommend it to anyone.

I'm the biggest skeptic there is about "beginner" kits of anything. This one exceeded my expectations. Sure, you're paying more for this rod and reel than you would a $50 cheap-o at Bass Pro, but you get a good quality rod, a decent reel, and it's all ready to go. The rod has good action...it's pretty whippy, so it takes time to get your cast down. Practice with it for a couple weeks and you'll be in great shape. Note that the "warranty" isn't a "break your rod, send it in, get a new one for free" type...you have to pay something like $30 for a new rod. It's still better than buying a new one at an outfitter, though. The case is nice, and it gives you a little peace of mind when throwing the thing in your trunk. If you're new to fly fishing like me, I suggest you get a few things in addition to this rod and reel. 1) a fly box...you can get one from bass pro for $10 to $15 and they're really nice to have 2) additional flies and floatant...you get three flies with this kit and they're pretty pathetic quality. 3) additional tippet and a couple leaders. If you're like me, you'll get knots in your tippet and leaders, so it's good to have back up when you just can't get those knots out! 4) a beginner's book about knot tying (or watch some online videos...tons of good instruction on YouTube) 5) a hat that protects your ears; also get sunglasses that cover your eyes well

I travel a lot and I'm a beginner fly fisherman. I didn't want to break the bank and this medium action 4 piece was perfect for travel. I can even leave the line on and put the real in the case, a HUGE benefit for me. I haven't caught a fish on it yet (i know sad) but I don't feel like a complete idiot when I whip it out around experienced fly fisher buddies of mine.

i'm new to fly fishing so i took a 2-hour lesson with a professional guide and decided to not rush into the fly fishing shop to hand over my monthly mortgage payment for all the 'stuff' you 'need.' did some online research and found lots of good reviews for Wild Water as a company and for this combo kit specifically. took it with me on a family vacation in VT where they had a two catch&release ponds stocked with trout (i think i scared the fish with all my practicing, which was ok in my book since just the casting alone was fun). very compact size with a sturdy case makes this ideal for travel by car or plane. appreciate the 3 flies that came with it as well as the spooled up reel. overall, i've used it more than a dozen times in less than 3 weeks and i'm loving the experience. free shipping and no tax is always an Amazon best bet!

I didn't want to spend more than a $100 for a portable fly rod & reel, so after researching, I selected the Wild Water Fly Fishing Complete Black Starter HX6-090-4 package. Good quality rod, reel, and case. The storage case also includes a small zippered side pocket for fly box storage. Great for hiking. Received excellent service from both Amazon and Wild Water. Fast shipping. Very satisfied.

I just retired and have always wanted to learn fly fishing. I looked around and after much checking decided on this starter package. It has everything you need to get going. Not knowing much about the equipment myself, I asked the guys at the anglers club that I had joined. They all agreed that it was a pretty good deal. I did want a spare spool for the reel and called Wild Water directly. I actually spoke with Eric Dodds, the owner, who was a great help. He sent me a spare spool at a reasonable price. I would highly recommend this package.

I bought this rod as a combo 6 or so years ago. I have caught a ton of trout in streams, rivers and even on the lake with it. It is not my primary rod when fishing a lake, but I do use it as a backup. Also caught smallmouth and bluegill out of ponds and local private areas. I sometimes keep it in my vehicle and it works great for that. It fits perfectly in the backpack with a small tackle set, and that is what I got it for. Have caught lots of trout on this rod, up to 4lbs no problems. It finally broke off the tip when I lent it to my brother, but his 4 year old is pretty hard on things and he didn't break it fishing, just around camp somehow. Still works, but without the end segment it is even stiffer than before(see my Cons below). I feel I have gotten my money's worth 2 or 3 times over. There are two cons I find to this rod: 1: It is not as flexible as standard rods. Don't expect it to bend like a 4' Ugly stick. It simply won't. That's not to say it is not flexible enough, it is, but it's not the same. Once you are used to it there is no problem. 2: If you pull the extensions out too tight, they are a real pain to get it collapsed again. Just don't pull it out more than needed to keep the rod from sliding back and you are good to go. Because of these two things I give it 4 stars, but it's not that I feel it is a bad product, I just reserve 5 stars for truly flawless gear. Pretty much you either use this as the cheap option, or bring a rod protector for your nicer setup when hiking.

It was kind of flimsy when I got it. Action is a little too light. ONe good smallmouth and its gonna give out i believe. But I do like that it collapses like it does. Been looking for one of these since summer. Had a similar Shakespeare collapsable for years and it finally gave out on me this past summer. There are some Big smallmouth in ShoalS Creek.

This is a very good rod for the money. Very light and can work with a spinning reel as well as a spin cast. Item arrived very quickly and was as expected. Will use this rod for backpacking trips, or in my case, motorcycle touring with a spincast reel.

I ordered this rod for my husband. He keeps it in his golf bag so that he can fish on the course ponds. This rod is perfectly sized so that it is easy to transport, but functional enough to fish small ponds.

The 4'6" model works real well for kids. Too small for adults. Well made product, stores real easy for travel. Only 1' long when fully broke down. Bought one of these a couple years ago and like it so I ordered a few more online.
