The Amityville HorrorReviewsFrom the first shot in the movie, THE AMITYVILLE HORROR sets the pace with a perpetual sense of unease and subtle psychological terror that continues until the final shot. There is no point throughout the entire film where the audience is safe. Rather than forcing heavy make-up or special FX on the audience, the it is the atmosphere built through the slow destruction of the characters' sanity paired with creepy events that garners genuine scares. There is no point at which the film clearly states that the events are actually occurring, and many of the clues leave the audience guessing as to whether the characters have passed their mental breaking point or whether the gate of hell has truly been opened beneath their new home. James Brolin offers one of the most frightening performances in the entire genre, truly becoming the character of George Lutz and walking the audience through his paranoid delusions, fear, and obsession. His crazed expressions and downward spiral into madness are more terrifying than any of the supernatural elements of the plot. AMITY also offers some of the most memorable horror scenes as well, most notably the scenes of the walls dripping blood and the priest that is forced out of the house by the disembodied voice screaming "GET OUT!!" While there are clearly elements that have been lifted from several other successful films from the 70s in this haunted tale, it is by all means and standards a classic in the genre, and becomes more and more interesting with repeated viewings. A family falls prey to a series of supernatural events after moving into a New England home with a sinister past... -Carl Manes I Like Horror Movies The Amityville Horror is about a large house on the coast of Long Island where newly weds George and Kathy Lutz and their three children move into the house that they hope will be their dream house but it ends up in terror. Despite full disclosure by the real estate agent of the home's history, George and Kathy buy the house. George says, "Houses don't have memories," but they turn to their family priest Father Delaney who believes the house is haunted and performs an exorcism on the house. But the evil spirit in the house causes him to become blind and makes him very ill. George and Kathy with the help of another priest Father Bolen and a police detective they face the fears of the house, but not knowing the spirit is planning to possess George and then the children. "The Amityville Horror" has all the trappings of an excellent haunted house story. A very good supernatural thriller. If you enjoy being scared out of your wits, this movie will do it for you. The original The Amityville Horror (1979) stars James Brolin, Margot Kidder, and Rod Steiger. A family of six had been murdered in a Long Island, New York home on November 13, 1974. A year or so later George and Kathy Lutz moved into this Long Island home. When the Lutz family moves in, strange events start to take place, such as walls that drip blood, rooms with swarms of flies, rocking chairs that rock by themselves, and toilets with pitch black water with the appearance of tar. It seems as though some Satanic presence is in the house. There is even what seems to be a portal to Hell in the basement. The Lutzes must try to escape this house they had moved into just 28 days earlier. Can they do it? This movie is what I would classify as a fair, moderately effective horror movie. Not great, not terrible, just fair. It's definitely not in my all-time Top 5 list of haunted house movies. Far from it. But it's fairly decent. The story itself has been controversial from the very beginning, with many claiming it's a hoax. This has never been proven. Regardless of whether it's a hoax or not, it's a fairly decent movie to watch on Halloween night. On the plus side, this movie's greatest thing it has going for it is its musical score. Very creepy. In a close second is the autumn atmosphere. We also get to see Margot Kidder in pigtails! Gotta love the '70s. Kidder also shows some skin. On the negative side, the movie has a lot of boring parts where I was waiting for something to happen. That's the movie's greatest weakness, followed by some mediocre acting. Also, this movie, in my opinion, borrows from The Exorcist in some ways, even if it's in a very subtle way. All in all, a fairly decent haunted house movie. Not anywhere near my Top 5 haunted house movies of all time. Still, it's worth at least one viewing. You might like it more than I do. Try it. The Amityville Horror Is frightening and more so that is Based on True Events or inspired by them, What Happen no one really knows? But evil Sadly does exist, as Do Spirits. While I could care less for James brolin who's a commie and married to one(typical hollywood) You should not pass up this film! it is the original and better than the Remake. Part 2 is just as creepy!Don't watch at night or with the lights out! I want to start out by saying that this movie is an undisputed horror classic. I do not want any of my critiques to take away from that. The Amityville Horror is a familiar haunted house tale derived from "true" events. It is about a young family who moves into a house that was a real steal. So what if its previous inhabitants were all shot to death in their sleep by a man guided by voices in his head? Does it really matter that the patriarch of the new family looks exactly like that gun toting lunatic? Houses don't have memories, right? The house is the real star of the movie. Walls bleed, crucifixes invert, and disembodied voices are aplenty. While there are plenty of scares to go around, they simply are not as scary by today's standard. However, the image of the house with a soft glow emitting from the windows is every bit as iconic and memorable as Freddy's glove. The audio is superb. Squalling cats, creaky steps, and raspy demonic voices are crisp and clear and will have you wondering about that dark corner in your room when the surround sound is cranked up. The haunting children's choir that runs throughout the movie is as disturbing today as it was when I first heard it so many years ago. The picture quality and complete lack of any special features is a bit disappointing. The picture is certainly and upgrade from the DVD, but it is only average at best compared to other Blu-rays. Many scenes are sharp and vibrant, but too many are dull and blurry. Whether this is the fault of the filmmakers or simply a less than stellar transfer, I do not know, but the bad is more visible on Blu-ray than it is on DVD. Luckily the good outweighs the bad, but only marginally. However, something that is unforgivable is the lack of any special features except for a poor quality trailer. No commentary, no behind the scenes, no documentaries-nothing. This simply does not fly in this day. Even something as simple as a screen of text about the events that this movie is based on would have been okay, but to have nothing is inexcusable. Overall, this is a great release of a horror classic. If you have never seen this movie before, keep in mind that it is about 30 years old. Scare tactics then were considerably different than they are today. Don't be critical. Dim the lights, crank the surround sound, and I'm sure you will have a great time. This is definitely the best version to date despite my minor complaints. GET OUT!...er...get it now! Based on a bestselling, allegedly nonfiction book about haunted goings-on in a Long Island house (The Amityville Horror Conspiracy), this rather cheesy horror movie is more silly than unsettling. James Brolin and Margot Kidder star as newlyweds who move into the empty home and are gradually affected by the legacy of a murder committed on the premises... |

Wild Water Fly Fishing "Wild Country" 3 Weight, 5 Foot 6 Inches, 4 Piece Freshwater Fishing RodReviewsI purchased the 5ft.6in.3wt.rod 01-26-10 thru amazon.I received rod in about a week.I fished the new rod two days later. After about thirty minutes of fishing my reel came off the rod because the but cap came off the rod.I was able to get the but cap with my net.I knew the rod had a lifetime warranty but I was afaid I would have to pay shipping and a 35.00 fee for another rod.I called wildwater the next day and got Eric Dodds(the owner). He was very helpful and told me I had to do nothing. He said he would send me another rod at once and for me to simply put the bad rod in the box the new rod came in and place the return label on it and give to UPS. I have received the new rod as promised. Eric also sent me a wildwater shirt. The rod felt great that first day .I think the rod is well made, the but falling off was just one of those things that can happen. That is why customer service is important. The treatment I received has already made me think about buying a 10wt. saltwater rod from wildwater.By the way it is very hard to find a 5ft6in. flyrod for small streams, at 99.00 this rod is a great buy! Rod Building Guide: Fly, Spinning, Casting, TrollingReviewsI've bought several rod building books so far. They all seem to put gtreat emphasis on locating the Spine of the rod. They all tell you how to find itwith a weight, but they don't tell you once you found if the spine is up or down. Nor do they tell you whether the line eyelets go on top or the bottom. One even said the latest fad is to have the eyelets spiral around the rod from handle to the tip. I wish I knew where it is. Very detailed and helpful information in easy to follow directions. A good information book to have. Short and to the point, this is a must read book for someone wanting to build their own custom fishing rod. Tom does an outstanding job getting his methods across. Thanks for a great read!!! This is a good beginners book covering the many facets of rod building and repair. The graphics are well done. The book is written by a hobbiest not a professional writer but the book is so well done it is not evident. I enjoy this book it help a lot understand in and out of rod building from start to the finish stage i also score it 10/10. I say good for beginner to understand want fishing rod needs to make it and good fishing rods. Average Rating:![]() |

Fundamentals of Building a Bamboo Fly-RodReviewsThis book is an excellent resource for anyone interested in pursuing the time honored craft of bamboo fly rod construction. It provides the right level of detail, along with constructive notes and ideas that help the newly initiated devotees build themselves a fuller picture of this fine art A very concise, easy to follow, step-by-step presentation on how to build a bamboo fly rod for the beginner or novice. It should also be of value to those who are interested in either restoring or refurbishing a vintage rod, as this type of work requires a fundamental knowledge of how these rods were built. This book provides that knowledge. Good book for those new to bamboo rod construction as I am, with practical step-by-step explainations, recommendations and tips. Good book for the book shelf but its going to spend a fair bit of its time on the workbench in the shed. This is a truly excellent book on building a bamboo fly rod, and it is possibly the best currently available. The instructions are precise, the photos and drawings are detailed and the author(s) write the book from the standpoint of "We WANT you to suceed.." The truly rank beginnger (me, in other words) will find the list of tools and materials at the beginning of the book a bit daunting, and undoubtbly expensive, but this in a book about building a fine bamboo fly rod, not building a cheap one. A bit more about tapers, (and figuring your own) would have been apprecaited, but all in all, a suberb book for the rod builder, or for those of us who appreicate a bamboo fly rod... This is an excellent book for those planning to build their first bamboo rod. Each phase of construction is broken down into its essential elements, and the tools and time required to complete the task. The authors make the process much less daunting. I had only two criticisms. After reading the chapter on planing I had a few unanswered questions, and I wish there was more information on choosing appropriate hardware. These points are minor. If you want to build a bamboo rod, this is the first book to read, and the only book that many beginners will need. Average Rating:![]() |
